  1. I recently read ‘Feel-bad education’ by Alfie Kohn, the guest speaker at the summit. A reasonable but not brilliant book. Progressive education is to a large degree child-centric or democratic education. It was very popular in the UK in the 1970s but it was often done poorly. Progressive education is much worse than regimented teaching without the right teachers. So it was abandoned for the wrong reasons. It is based on the understanding that children learn when following meaningful, self-directed explorations of the real world rather than receive adult ordained dissected and serialised narrated facts.
