Harper’s reports that a bunch of Ron Paul zealots broke out in chants of “USA” when a Puerto Rican delegate took the podium. Does this hint at some nativism, or perhaps racism?
Perhaps. This is a major political party that already had similar problems during the primary debates.
Paulites seek to abolish most public services. The Department of Education is commonly noted. Inasmuch as I am critical of the current Federal education policy, I do believe that a Federal referee is necessary. I couldn’t tell you what that role would look like yet.
But no Federal role might lead to extreme localism. Then, the ignorance, stupidity, and hatred expressed by Paul zealots at this convention would become embedded in some local education systems, would it not?

I think that is the go-to chant for shutting down unruly crowd members!
I figured. Seems silly though. USA?
From responses on Twitter, I understand that the USA chants came from Romney supporters trying to drown out the Paulites. I think the juxtaposition may have been accidental with the Puerto Rican speaker on stage, but perhaps revealing anyways?
From accounts on Twitter, it was actually Mitt Romney supporters chanting USA to drown out the Paulites. I think it is possible it was not directed at the speaker at all, but was a highly unfortunate display of where jingoism can lead.
Interesting. But I have no idea why there would be chants of USA.
